The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) group is a perfect example of what Heriot-Watt Union does best: a welcoming and fun social network, supporting one another and raising awareness of issues through campaigning. In the last two years the group has grown from a few loyal members to a socially and politically active group with many dedicated volunteers and support from across campus.

One of the main campaigns this year drew attention to the ban on gay and bisexual men from donating blood. Over 1000 signatures were collected around university urging the blood service to review the ban. Activist training nights were also held, showing how to lobby effectively and run events, as well as providing info for LGBT students.

The group work closely with organisations like NUS, The Equality Network and anti-fascist group, Scotland United, attending demonstrations in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In December, the group run the annual Red Party, which has raised over £1000 for the National AIDS Trust over the last two years. The elaborate hosts and team put on a great show and raffle, drawing a big crowd outside of LGBT.

Last year, LGBT won the ‘Group of the Year’ at the Union Oscars and were also awarded NUS Scotland LGBT ‘Society of the Year’, recognising all the hard work and achievements they have made.
