Student Staff or Career Staff?

Around 20 people work in career roles at HWUnion. These people usually work all year round, in both full-time and part-time positions. Some people have just joined us, others have worked here for over 20 years. Career staff are usually either permanent or on a fixed-length contract, with regular hours of work and a salary paid each month.

We have a further 40 people who work in student staff roles at HWUnion. They work in a commercial outlets and central support teams. These roles are usually held by students at Heriot-Watt University, who want a part-time job to fit around their studies. We do everything we can to provide training and development for our student staff, to help equip them with skills for the future. If you join us as a student staff member, you are most likely to work flexibly and during term-time only, paid an hourly rate each month.

How to apply for a job with us

Click the link above for the job that interests you. Each role will have a Job Description outlining what the role involves as well as a Person Specification outlining the sort of person we are looking for. Read these fact sheets carefully and make sure they sound right for you.

Each role will also include a link to an application form. Complete the form in as much detail as possible, paying particular attention to the Supporting Statement section which is where you should clearly explain how you meet the criteria of the person specification. It's also your opportunity to make youself stand out from all the other applicants!

Completed forms should be returned to the email address shown, or handed in to the Union Reception if this is easier.

What happens after I apply?

We do everything we can to make sure our selection process is fair. We only accept completed application forms, not CV's, to make sure we get the same information from each applicant. Each application is reviewed in turn by a selection panel, who will identify those that meet the criteria specified.

If you're invited to attend an interview, you will meet the selection panel who will ask various questions to get to know you and what you will bring to the role. It's also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have.

At this stage, we must also verify your eligibility to work in the UK, so you will be asked to bring your passport or birth certificate with you, and a copy will be taken. If you are from overseas, we will need to see your visa to check the role you have applied for won't contravene your status in the UK.

Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible - but please be patient. We usually get exceptional candidates and it can be tricky to narrow it down! We'll be in touch to let you know if you were successful or not, and offer any feedback if possible.

Unfortunately we don't have the resources to contact all applicants that don't make the shortlist for interviews. If you don't hear from us four weeks after submitting your application, please assume your application hasn't been shortlisted.
