A Day Out in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is Scotland's beautiful capital city and is the cosmopolitan hub of culture and history. The city centre is only a bus ride away from those of you who will be staying in Edinburgh halls. To help you out, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite things to do in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Zoo
Awe at the UK's only giant pandas and koalas, delight at the mischievous meerkats, cheer on the penguin parade. It's a little pricey but you get a student discount!
Dynamic Earth
Ever wanted to touch an iceberg, experience a volcanic eruption or walk through a tropical rainforest? Well, now you can. Find it near the stunning surroundings of Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park.
Arthur's Seat
Speaking of! Climb 251m above sea level up a dormant volcano and be treated to breathtaking views of the city. It's surrounded by 640 acres of royal parkland (Holyrood Park). A nice one for the old Instagram.
Edinburgh Castle
How many cities have you been to where a castle overshadows the main shopping street and train station? You can visit this working military base and discover its rich history.
National Museum of Scotland
Top up your knowledge with something that's not about your course -it'll be a welcome relief. Alternatively, with free WiFi, free entry and lovely coffee, it makes a great study space!
Camera Obscura
Check out Edinburgh's oldest visitor attraction, packed full of illusions, tricks, puzzles, and interactive exhibits. Try and escape the mirror maze or shrink yourself like Alice in Wonderland in the Ames, or try and keep a steady walk in the vortex tunnel (warning: do not do this when hungover).
The Royal Yacht Britannia
Climb aboard the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. It was in service between 1954 and 1997 and now you can experience what life was like on board as a member of the royal family. You can even have tea and cake onboard the Royal Deck Tea Room.
