A Night Out in Edinburgh

With no less than four universities, Edinburgh has a thriving student nightlife scene. You’ll soon discover your favourite place to head but for now here are some suggestions to get you started:
ATIK, West Tollcross
Formally known as Cav, ATIK is Edinburgh's biggest nightclub. It has undergone a massive refurbishment just in time for you all coming here!
Shanghai, George Street
Heriot-Watt Sports Union’s official night is Frat Wednesdays at Shanghai. You’ll feel like you meet everyone you know there, and someone will inevitably start our traditional chant: “I said You Watt, You Watt…”
WhyNot? George Street
“WhyNot tonight? Why not?” Yes, we’ve all heard that one before. With two dance floors and a large outdoor area, hold on tight to your friends! Mondays are popular with students.
The Hive, Niddry Street
A lot of Hive nights are unplanned. You just sort of… end up there. Don’t ask us how, you just do. Maybe don’t wear your best clothes but make sure you know your charts and your cheese (and your rock on a Tuesday). Open 365 days a year, every night is a Hive night.
Liquid Rooms
Both a music venue and a nightclub, Liquid Rooms now hosts the ever popular Silk Thursdays, after the iconic club Silk was demolished earlier in the year. (RIP Silk.) Look out for Bongo Dave.
Bourbon, Frederick Street
Bourbon is still pretty new to Edinburgh as far as things go. Rascals Thursdays are popular with Heriot-Watt students, where the soundtrack is mainly Hip Hop and R&B and drinks are on offer.
Cabaret Voltaire, Blair Street
If you’re more of a fan of house and techno than mainstream music then Cab Vol is the place for you. It’s a bit like a dark cave though, so maybe bring a torch.
There are so many more nightclubs in Edinburgh, it’s hard to write about them all. We’ll let you go exploring and discover them in your own time.
But if you’re not up for hitting the clubs, why not try:
- Cinema – the nearest to campus by bus (34) is Cineworld at
- FountainPark.
- Comedy – check out The Stand Comedy Club on York Place.
- Theatre – check out the Usher Hall/Festival Theatre/Traverse
- Theatre.
- Bowling – Tenpin at Fountain Park.
- Your Student Union – quizzes, games nights, live music and more.
And that isn’t even all we wanted to say about Edinburgh! Rest assured, you’ll never be bored in this city.
Living on SBC? Don't sweat, there's a Borders Railway service from Galashiels to Edinburgh! You don't have to miss out on all the city excitement!

Disclaimer: Club information and promotions was correct at the time of writing. Heriot-Watt Student Union encourages responsible drinking. Remember: you don't need to drink alcohol to have a great night.
