University life is definitely not all work, no play. You’re going to find yourself with a nice bit of free time in your first year. Even if your degree is lecture or lab intensive, it’s university policy to not schedule classes to finish after
Join a Society
You don’t have to be an expert to join a society. In fact, it’s a great opportunity to try something new! Joining a society gives you the chance to meet a like-minded group of friends and have some fun together. There’s a real sense of community that comes from being part of a society. Is gaming your thing? Perhaps you’re a drama queen, or want to celebrate your culture? With a list of over 60 societies to choose from, there’s something for you!
On the off chance, you don’t see something you fancy, starting your own society couldn’t be easier. All you need is 9 friends willing to get involved, one of whom can act as treasurer. It’s great to have a hobby, and saying you started a society at

Join a Sports Club
Fancy a bit of exercise? Heriot-Watt Sports Union is home to a number of sports clubs, all of which provide regular training opportunities. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a superstar athlete to join a sports club – if you’re new to a sport, you’re encouraged to come along. Our sports clubs give you the opportunity to improve your performance, keep your fitness levels up and represent Heriot-Watt. As well as each club providing their own social activities, the Sports Union puts on several socials a year, including the Sports Ball, Sports Ceilidh and annual Varsity night out – great opportunities to get competitive on the dance floor!

Volunteer
Our Student Union runs the Watt Volunteers scheme which rewards you for getting involved. There are several ways to volunteer with the Union. You might take on a committee role with a society, which you can note down your hours for. Next year you might want to become a Freshers Helper – yes, you could easily be one of those smiley, happy people in the pink t-shirts!
The Advice Hub is always looking for volunteers to help put together their Exam Survival Packs during exam periods.
Through the Watt Volunteers awards scheme, you can even volunteer outside the university – perhaps with a charity shop or local sports club – and your hours will still count towards your end of
Becoming a volunteer not only helps others, it’s great for you as well. You’ll get to meet all sorts of people from across the university. Together, you’ll get that satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a difference to Heriot-Watt. If the warm fuzzy feelings of giving back aren’t enough for you, volunteering is going to look great on your CV! New to this year, your volunteer hours will be accredited by the Saltire Awards and displayed alongside your grades when you graduate! And what’s more, you could be rewarded by the Union for all your hard work, with our Volunteer Awards ceremony at the end of the year.
