Freshers FAQs

Here at the Student Union, we like to think that we know pretty much everything that’s going on with Freshers Week. We’ve been communicating with a lot of you incoming Freshers over the past few weeks, and there are a few questions about coming to Heriot-Watt that keep cropping up again and again. These are obviously really good questions that you all really want to know the answers to, so we’ve gathered a list of Freshers FAQs for you to take a look at.

What’s the deal with these Freshers Passes? – Freshers Passes save you money and time. You get guaranteed entry into the following unforgettable evening events:

UV Party (Sunday 2nd)

Beach Party (Monday 3rd)

Back to School (Tuesday 4th)

Welcome to the Jungle (Wednesday 5th)

Freebie Friday (Friday 7th)

FRESHTIVAL (Saturday 8th)

You also get free cloakroom and the option of an NUS Card at a lower price. You can get yours here and have your week’s entertainment sorted already. Hurry, online sales stop at noon on Friday – but if you do forget, there will be a limited number being sold at the Student Union building this weekend.

You also get awesome deals on food from the Union. All week long you can get £3 Burger, Fries & Soft Drink from Geordies (our bar) and you'll also get 10% off your first food order too!

You'll also be entered into our competition to win FREE BURGER & FRIES for the duration of your degree! For every evening event you attend, you'll receive an entry into the draw. So by getting a Freshers Pass you'll increase your chance of winning!

What events can I go to if I’m 17? – You can come to every Student Union event apart from Welcome to the Jungle in ATIK on Wednesday 5th. The only difference is you won’t get an Over 18 wristband and therefore can’t be served alcohol at the bar. Because of the Scottish school system, loads of people will be under 18 and you’ll make plenty of friends in the same situation!

Do I have to move in on the day specified in my contract? – Move in is happening over two days this year, and you shouldn’t be arriving earlier than stated in your contract. If your contract says you’re moving in on the Sunday, only under very special circumstances can you move in on the Saturday; such as if you’re an international student who’s already booked their flights. If you’re arriving late, that shouldn’t be a problem – head to the University’s Main Reception to pick up your keys. You might want to contact your academic school to make sure you’re not missing any enrolment. For any queries to do with halls or moving in, contact the Accommodation Office at halls@hw.ac.uk.

Can I bring a friend to the events? - Yes, you can bring up to two non-Heriot-Watt students to any Freshers event. They may be asked to sign in though so make sure they bring their ID.

Can I bring my own mini fridge for my room? – Unfortunately not! These are a fire hazard. If you need one for medical reasons, the university can provide you with one. Otherwise, cooperate with your flatmates and you’ll definitely get enough space.

When do classes begin? – Monday 10th September, woohoo! Unless you’re one of the lucky ones with a Monday off… Follow this link to get your timetable.

Remember – if we haven’t got the A to your Q here, we’re only a message away! Speak to the Student Union on Facebook or send us an email at info@hwunion.com or you can reach us on all the usual social media places (@HWUnion). We exist to give you the best possible university experience and we’re here for you from the very start.
