One of the big questions people usually ask when they move into halls is where on earth are the supermarkets? Being a campus university has its advantage and disadvantages and one of the downsides is that you do need to travel a little bit to reach the big supermarkets. Don’t worry, they are not far away at all!
Edinburgh Campus
The Student Shop on campus is run by the Union and has lots of your essential items like milk, bread, eggs and an off-licence. You don't need to trek far for your basic necessities or a sandwich at lunchtime. Visit hwunion.com/services/shop to learn more.
The nearest supermarkets to campus are:
Asda Chesser (it’s open 24/7 and has a McDonalds!) - 3 New Mart Road, Edinburgh, EH14 1RJ. You can get there by taking the number 34 bus (about 20 minutes).
Sainsbury’s Longstone - Inglis Green Road, Edinburgh, EH14 2ER. You can get there by taking the number 34 bus (about 17 minutes)
Tesco at Hermiston Gait Retail Park - Cultins Rd, Edinburgh, EH11 4DG. It’s the nearest supermarket to campus but doesn’t have that great a bus link. You can take the number 63 directly there but it isn’t a very frequent service so watch out. Alternatively, you can get a 25/34 and walk down (about 10 minutes). This supermarket is better if somebody can drive you there! Pssst - there’s a Krispy Kreme and KFC at Hermiston Gait Retail Park too!
All of these supermarkets are big superstores so you'll find everything you're looking for, including homeware and electrical goods.
If you’re budgeting more than you may find that Lidl and Aldi are ideal. There is a branch of Aldi at 100 Gorgie Park Rd, Edinburgh EH11 2QL, and a Lidl at Dalry Rd, Edinburgh EH11 2EF, both of which you can get to on the 25 bus.
Some of the major supermarkets also deliver to halls so you might want to consider an online shop. There is often a minimum spend so why not consider a group shop with your flatmates?
SBC Campus
Near the SBC Campus you will find:
Asda - Currie Rd, Galashiels TD1 2AG (open 24 hours) - 4-minute drive or 20-minute walk
Tesco - Paton St, Galashiels TD1 3AT (open 24 hours) - 4-minute drive or 20-minute walk
Aldi - King St, Galashiels TD1 1PX - 8-minute drive
